Workaround: Sending messages with images after the text

Note: This is a workaround, not an officially supported image-ordering feature. It may not work for every carrier, phone, or messaging app, and we recommend testing before using it for a live send.

Overview

By default, when you send an MMS with both text and an image, recipients see the image appear before the message text. If you want the image to appear after the text, there is a filename workaround that may help in some cases.

Workaround

Before uploading the image to your message, rename the image file so the filename begins with a special character. In prior testing, using the character ƒ at the beginning of the filename caused the image to render below the text in most cases.

Example filename:

ƒ-image-name.png

How to try it

  1. Save the image you want to send to your computer.

  2. Rename the image file so the filename starts with a special character, such as ƒ.

  3. Upload the renamed image to your message.

  4. Send a test message to yourself or your team.

  5. Confirm whether the image appears below the text on the devices and carriers you care about.

Important limitations

  • This is a hack/workaround, not guaranteed product behavior.

  • It may only work for some carrier paths. The behavior was observed with some downstream vendors, but may not apply everywhere.

  • It may vary by recipient device, messaging app, carrier, and how the message is processed downstream.

  • Because this depends on downstream MMS rendering behavior, Switchboard cannot guarantee the image will appear last for every recipient.
